Reach for the Stars Awards 2009!

More than 200 young people descended upon the stunning River Bank Park Plaza Hotel to collect their awards at Lambeth Council’s ‘Reach for the Stars’ sixth annual event. Children and young people aged 0 to 24 received awards for excellence in education, progress, positive contribution, dedication and hard work, and outstanding achievement.

The two lucky winners of the outstanding achiever award scooped an X-Box 360 and Nintendo DS Lite, provided by event sponsors Microsoft. Every young person invited to attend received a trophy and certificate.

The special day was split into two events, with the morning ceremony for under 11’s presented by TV and BBC London Radio star, Eddie Nestor, and the more formal evening event for 11-24 year-olds presented by Choice FM's DJ Abrantee.

What happened on the day

The fun-filled day included plenty of entertainment with performances from the young people themselves as well as professional dancers, plus face painting and balloon modelling for the youngsters during the morning session and a lavish menu.

The event also saw the launch of the council’s new children’s rights project and ‘The Pledge’ – a charter put together by Lambeth Children and Young People’s Service to support children in care. The Pledge includes a list of 18 promises made by the council to young people which was promoted at the event with a series of children’s books, postcards, and leaflets.
